The magnitude of downdrag load can be reduced by 90 percent if the pile it provided with
a bitumen coating over that portion of the pile within the fill layer. Downdrag loads an also be
reduced by prodrilling with a 16-inch auger and filling the hole with a bentonite slurry prior to
driving the pile. We recommend that no more then 40 feet of the pile be predrilled, in which ase
the anticipated downdrag load an be reduced by 60 percent.
5.3.4 %nAI[ul;;9=
The piles should be driven through the fill and into the glacial soil. The driving should be
terminated only when a sate Of *Practical mfuar is reached. The piles are expected to penetrate
at loot 3 to 5 feet into the glacial ail before refusal. However, deeper psnstrations (perhaps 10
to 12 feet into glacial ail) may occur at locations wham weathered tin it txweat. sued on the
result of our dynamic pile toelym using the wave equation sathod, the practical refusal as be
talon es 50 blows per 6 inches of penetration. This criterion was developed using a mdium to
heavy duty hammer with an energy rating of 39,000 foot-pounds. Should a different humor or
a different pile section be used, dynamic pis analyses should be conducted to revies the refusal
blow counts. In any case, driving blow counts should not exceed 20 blows per inch.
Obstructions are anticipated in the raadom fill. The obstruction may result from the cosmos
pieces, logs, or boulders. We recommend the use of hardened plle shoes to mist in driving
through obstructions and in adequately penetrating the dew baring ails. Some piles, however.
may reach the not -to -exceed blow counts (20 blows per inch) at depths that an alwWwor then
the anticipated depths of the bearing materials. When this occurs, the situation dmW he
evaluated by the on -site geotechnial engineer. The fectors to he considered may include the
depth of refusal, consistency of the driving resistance, and perhaps the driving records of the
neighboring piss. A replacement pis may be requested if refusal by obstructions is suspected.
a-005.006" -01 Assor070O.ap
OOM-NO•016 14
