Driving of the H-piles will cause ground vibrations in the vicinity of the driving operations.
We estimate that if a pile driving hammer with a rated energy of approximately 32.000 foot-
pounds is used, the level of ground vibrations (termed 'peak particle velocity) at a distance of
100 feet from the pile being driven will be approximately 0.045 inches per second. Shnuld a
hammer of 60,000 foot-pounds be required, the ground vibration level at 100 feet distance will
increase to approximately 0.15 inches per second. Both values are considered *barely perceptible⢠
to persons, and are well below the 2.0 inches per second threshold level that is generally
considered damaging to even residential structures (reference: Wiss, 'Construction Vibrations.
State of the Art; Journal of the Geotechnial Engineering Division, ASCE, Vol. 107, 1981). We
understand that pile driving locations will not be closer than 100 feet from the existing building.
If sensitive electronic equipment is located within the existing building near the north end, the
equipment manufacturer should be consulted regarding the effect of these vibration levels on the
performance of the equipment.
5.4 FLOOR SLAB SUPPORT
5.4.1 f; mind
The random fill at this site typically consists of a medium dense to dense upper layer, below
which are zones of loose and organic rich subsoils. The loose zones ae found throughout much
of the expansion ayes and the organic rich zone seems concentrated in the south -antral portion
only (see Plate 9). Both types of soils are found in pockets between medium dense to dense soils.
The organic rich some tends to be more continuous and greater in thickness. Based on the boring
data and the performance of the slab of the existing building, we believe that the floor slab an
be constructed on grade throughout the expansion am, provided that the slab is constructed on
at lent 2 feet of select fill and that a surcharge is applied to the zone with organic rich subsoils.
The site preparation and placement of the fill are critical to the slab -on -grade construction. The
recommendations herein are contingent upon Dames & Moore's involvement in the quality control
of the project.
a-00S-00695.016\uos0700. up
00695-509.016 15
