° _ DAhiES & MOQRE
SSOE, Inc.
July 27, 1992
Page 3
AUGERCAST CONCREfE PILES
A total of 10 augercast concrete piles were installed to support ihe Elevator Pit located between
Columns F and G trom IJne 5.1 to 5.5. An additional 9 augercast concrete pfles were Instelled to
support the CO2 Tank near Column CC. The pfles were 18 Inchea in dlameter, embedded at
least 3(eet into the natural glacial till sofl and had an allowable downward capacity of 50 tons. The
piles were Installed by Malcom Drilling using a G•KLEMM 806D or 807D drlll rig and a Trenscrete
Sidewinder grout pump.
Our representative was present during pile Installatlon to record pertinent data Including the cast
length of the pile, ihe theoretical hole volume, the actual grout take, the grout pump pressure and
the head of grout In the auger. locatlon, alignment and grade Information was provkled by Wright
Schuchart Harbor Co. A summary ot the data for all piles monitored Is presented on Table 4(or
the Elevator Pit and Table 5 lor the CO2 Tank. Dames & Moore was not present during the
Installatlon of piies No. t and 2 at the CO2 Tank.
FLOOFi SLAB
Floor slab support was provfded on•grade afler preparatfons which included surcharging o(an
area approximately 4000 square feet in dimension and placement of a 2 foot thlck layer of select
compected fill soil. The surcharge was located as shown on Plate 1 corresponding to an area
designated by Dames& Moore as being underlaln by organlc((II soiis. The surcharge was placed
to minimlze post-construction settlements of the slab. The surcharge was roughly 16 to 18 feet In
height, remained In place for 25 to 30 days, and induced settlements raging(rom 3 to 7 Inches.
The surcharge remained In piace until Dames 8 Moore concluded that over 90 percent of the
anticipated settlement had occurred and that the obectives of the surcharging program had been
achleved. Surveying osettlement plates was provided by Wright Schuchart Harbor Company.
Our representatives were on sfte to monitor the preparatlons (or and placement o( the
surcharge, ihe monitoring of settlements Induced by the surcharge and monitoring ot compacUon
' of 1111 solls(or the slab subgrado. The select fill for the upper 2 feet of the subgrade conslsted ot
a 'pft run' and/or'screenings' material from Associated Sand 8 Gravol. Laboratory compaction
tests and tleld density testing were provided by PSI, Inc. The Dames & Moore representetWe
monitored the siripping ol asphalt and the proo(-rolling of exposed suriaces, and evaluated the
overall quality of the fill materlals and the completed compacted (ill product. So(t areas were
removed and replaced. All till within 4(eet below the bottom of the sleb was compacted to at least
95 percent of the maximum dry density.
