In my previous letter of May 21, 1993 items 3 and I1 were addressed to stairs A123 an
/ A 106.
The subsequent information on classroom layout was a help however using three approaches
I was not able to get an occupant load below 500 (one approach was the existing occupant
load which was 555).
'The existing stair width will accommodate an occupant load of approximately 640 and the
buiiding was constructed prior to the adven[of building codes.
Taking the above into consideration we would like to propose a possible solution to offset
the addition of a third exit stair:
A. Enclose stairs A106 and A123 at the Ist and 2nd floors. I
We would a]low one hour rated openings into the enclosures on the lst floor to allow
access to rooms A126, A126.2, A124, A119, A120, A121, A115.2, A108, A110,
All l, A107 and A104.
Enclosures constructed similar to those currently shown on the 3rd floor would be
acceptable (see item 6 below).
B. All classroom windows on the 3rd floor must have an operable portion which would
comply with Section 1204.
, / 6. Doors A323 - A323C and A315 - A315C must be 1 hour rated. Section 3309(c).
N ✓7, The corridor within the administrative office azea would comply with Section 3305(g) with
the addition of 20 minute doors and with other openings that would comply with Section
3305(h)2.
In previous discossions the City indicated that one hour construction weld not be required
for this corridor, however a one hour separation to the main building corridor was also
discussed.
We would like to stand Uehind our previous agreements but would also like to offer the
addition of 20 minute doors and openings in lieu of providing sepazation to the main
corridor. •
✓8. Handrail extensions in the direction of stair run per Section 3306(i) must be provided at
floors one and two of stairs A106 and A123.
1/9. All handrails must have their ends returned to walls or terminate in newel posts per Section
3306(i). "
