  v.
Subsurface exploradon was performed using a truck-mounied, 4-inch diameter continuous-flight
, hollow-stem auger. Eleven (11) explontory borings were drilled on May 7, 1991 and June 13,
1991, to a ma:imum depth of twenty one and one half(21.5) feeL The approximale lceations
of the borings are shown on the Site Plan, Figure 2. Logs of the borings and details regazding
the 6eld investigation are inciuded in Appendix A. Our laborarory testing is discussed in
Appendix B.
The site is rectangulaz in shapc, and has maximmn plan dimensions ot approximately L 10 by t70
, feet. It is flat with a maximum elevation difference of less than a foot. At the time of our field
! ' investigation, the site was covered with a six to eight-inch concrete slab (the thickness of the slab
was measured from the cored samples). Short grass was growing along the cracl:s. The site is
bordered to the west by Colby Avenue, ro the east by an a11ey, to lhe north and south by paved
pazking areas. Three twenry-five hundred gallon and one five hundred and fifty gallon
w underground storage tanks wcre removed from the site on August 15, 1989. The approximate
` ]ocations of these tanks is shown on the Site Plan, Figure 2.
i B. Subsurface
' The surface soils encountered in our exploratory borings generally consist of loose and very
,. loose silty sand (fill) which conGtined roots and traces of fibrous peat and undecomposed wood.
This till, which was probably placed on the site during the construction of the surzounding
development or during the construction of the existing slab-on-gnde, extends ro a depth of about
, six feet. Below this fill dense silry sand, which occasionally contained fin gravel, was
.^ encountered to the maximum depth of exploration which was about twenty-one (21) feet. The
'' s i l ry s a n d b e c a m e m o r e d e n s e with de pth. Detailed descriptions of the soils encountered in cach
i of the explorarory borings are presented on ihe boring logs in Appendix A. The passage o f time
'. could result in changes in the subsurface conditions due to environmental changes.
,I.
The attached boring logs and related information depict locauon-specific subsur(ace conditions,
a encountered during our tield investigation. The approximate locations of the borings were
determined by taping from reference comers (Figure 2) and should be considered accurate only
ro the degree implied by the method used.
