9 Washington Preservation Initiative
2005 Grant Application
1. Briefly describe the desired outcome that would result from the
implementation of this proposal.
Consider the following items in developing the response:
• What will be preserved?
• Who will benefit?
• How will Washington's cultural heritage be enhanced?
o- •1'Y}- '' s #t'',r• ,e Get'y'y` ''' '
3 '+ T
L . sem' a z '4
The Everett Public Library seeks to preserve rare manuscript items in its Northwest Room
Collection through Preservation Microfilming. Materials to be microfilmed include an
Everett Herald Index 1970 to 1991; Everett Theater business records 1904-1906; Snohomish
County WPA Writer's Project manuscripts;two manuscripts relating to the 1916 Everett
Massacre; and an 1897 Census of Everett. Specific microfilm products will include an
archive master,a print master and two service copies of each. The microfilm archive masters
will be stored with OCLC.
All the materials have been chosen as important to a study of Washington State's cultural and
historic past; all are significant materials with public demand; and all are at risk, having either
limited access or their survival threatened by daily use. Having these manuscripts on
microfilm will allow for interlibrary loans or the purchase of reels by other libraries. Each
manuscript has its own audience. The Herald index and the 1897 Census will be valuable to
regional and family historians; the Everett Massacre miscellany will appeal to labor history
researchers and biographers; the WPA writings will most likely be used by local historians
and women's history researchers; and the Everett Theater records will be used by theater
historians and biographers researching the careers of particular performers. In each case,a
microfilm copy will provide greater access, while protecting the fragile original document.
8 of 25 4 t)
