9 Washington Preservation Initiative
2005 Grant Application
microfilming, but this has never stretched to cover all materials needing attention. Because of
limited resources,we have had to prioritize our preservation projects, balancing public
demand for certain collections, past availability of money for digitizing collections, and the
overall condition of materials in the NW collections. Without this next step in their
preservation, they are endangered and in most cases, public accessibility to them is limited.
Having these materials microfilmed will preserve them, greatly increase their use, and offer
valuable materials to the public while preserving the rare originals.
All materials selected for this project belong to the Everett Public Library and are available for
public use in the library's Northwest Room. All have been chosen as important to a study of
Washington State's cultural and historic past; all are significant materials with public demand;
and all are at risk, having either limited access or their survival threatened by daily use. A
discussion of each follows.
Group One: 6800 pages
Everett Herald Index. From 1970 through 1991,Everett Public Library librarian Hazel
Clark created a subject index to the Everett Herald newspaper. It is the only Herald index
prior to the newspaper's own digitized index that started in 1992. Typed on 8 %z"x 11"paper
and arranged alphabetically by subject, "Hazel's Index"is assembled into 21 three-ring
binders. It is heavily used and requires constant maintenance. It gets increasing public use as
the years go by.
While some of the original typed sheets were saved and copied, many were not. For this
reason,if a page is lost, it is gone forever. Having the index microfilmed, with an original
archive master stored with OCLC,will insure the longevity of a valuable reference resource.
Important material covered in this period includes the controversial Navy Homeport issue; the
death of Senator Henry M.Jackson;the rise and fall of local politicians; the local Growth
Management Act; the Boeing recession and successes; environmental and water cleanup
issues; the Weyerhaeuser closure;numerous stories about local efforts to restore historic
properties.
Risk and Work Plan: This index is Endangered, use conditions definitely posing a threat to
the materials. It was made to be used every day, and it has been for over thirty years. From
the late 1970s to the present,Northwest Room staff have maintained these notebooks,
replacing pages and binders as needed on a monthly basis. Preservation microfilming would
insure its longevity, save staff time and make this material available to others outside of our
library for years to come. Due to its heavy use,the Everett Herald index is presently the most
threatened of our manuscript materials.
45
10 of 25
