Washington Preservation Initiative
9 2005 Grant Application
Fred Baker of Ferry Baker Mill; Rich Beaulieu of the American Piledriving Company; Everett
policeman Sergeant Mathias Fox; timber boss Joe Irving;Jake Michel, President of the local
AF of L; Granville Paine, city engineer; Everett Herald editor Abe Glassberg;Rev. Oscar
Norgard; Everett Mayor Frank Spencer;Nels Weborg, Secretary manager to Commission,
Port of Everett;A. G. Ziebell, former President of the Shingleweavers Union.
Risk and Work Plan: This manuscript is both Vulnerable and Endangered, the original on
cheap paper. The manuscript is kept in the library's archive and only occasionally seen by
researchers. Microfilming would both preserve and provide access to this manuscript without
further risk to the original. This manuscript will eventually be digitized and placed at the
library's website.
b. Oscar Carlson Exhibit Files, the Thomas Sullivan deposition,Case#16514(25
pages). On Nov. 5, 1916, Oscar Carlson was aboard the steamer Verona as it headed to
Everett from Seattle. Unknown to him,he was to become a victim in the shooting event that
day known as the Everett Massacre. Carlson claimed he was nonpartisan and merely was
aboard the vessel. He received 11 bullets to his body and in 1917 filed a suit against the
steamboat company the Vashon Navigation Company. Carlson was questioned by Thomas
Sullivan, and his testimony sheds important light on the events that day. These records were
stored at the Snohomish County courthouse for 60 years and then transferred to the library's
Northwest Room collection in the late 1970s.
Risk and Work Plan: The Carlson Exhibit file is Vulnerable and Endangered, being one-
of-a-kind and potential use posing a threat to the materials. While a full trial transcript exists
in county court records, this deposition in not in that collection. Present public access is a
photocopy. Microfilming and archival storage will preserve this document while providing
greater accessibility.
Group Five: 380 pages
1897 Census of Everett—Wards 1 through 6. This is a one-of-a-kind hand-written,hand-
bound Everett residential census of 1897 arranged in 6 binders (275 pages). 1897 was a
period of economic difficulty in the US. Everett records at this time are few. Local
newspapers for 1897 have not survived and there were no Polk's city directories published
between 1895 and 1900,making this census a highly important local document. An MS Word
file of the census was done by a NW Room volunteer(105 pages). This census is an
invaluable tool for genealogists and historians. We would like to include both the handwritten
and the typed versions on one reel, giving the serious researcher a chance to evaluate the
handwritten text . (380 pages in all)
Risk and Work Plan. This original census is Endangered. Presently the public uses the
computer transcription only. Preservation microfilming would insure the longevity of this rare
document and make it available to many, particularly those researching family history.
12dr25 47
