Washington Preservation Initiative
2005 Grant Application 9
3. Describe the solution. How does this solution alleviate or resolve the
existing situation previously described? Why is this solution the best
approach?
Consider the following items in developing the response:
• What is proposed to resolve the problem, alleviate the need, or take
advantage of the opportunity?
• What are the specific benefits of using this solution?
• Has other funding been obtained to support this project?
• Will the proposal have cooperative aspects involving more than one library
or other cultural organization? If yes, describe the nature of the cooperation.
• Will others benefit (e.g., will models for preservation or reports on
preservation techniques be developed that can be shared with other
libraries allowing them to develop similar projects)?
• If this is a phased step in preserving a collection, how does the described
solution fit into the plan for preservation of the collection?
i'-';':
. Everett Public Library also continues to provide the archival
materials and climate control necessaryfor housing the rare originals. We have made working
copies of some. But our regular budget never covers everything that needs to b done. We feel
that microfilming the manuscripts described above now is the next step in their preservation,
and have chosen this format because of its great longevity, as well as the fact that it will allow
the stored archival reels to be placed at a site other than our library(OCLC). It will also
provide multiple, easily storable, and easily replicated duplicates that can be purchased by our
library and even be sent to other requesting libraries. We will also catalog the material,
something that has not been done before. Thus we can offer the material to a much larger
audience.
Having these manuscripts on microfilm will allow for interlibrary loans or the purchase of
reels by other libraries. Each manuscript has its own audience. The Herald index and the
1897 Census will be valuable to regional and family historians; the Everett Massacre
miscellany will appeal to labor history researchers and biographers; the WPA writings will
most likely be used by local historians and women's history researchers; and the Everett
Theater records will be used by theater historians and biographers searching the careers of
4 8
14 of 25
