Washington Preservation Initiative 9
2005 Grant Application
6. How will the library continue a program of preservation after the end of
the grant period?
Consider the following items in developing the response:
• How will the library continue to maintain and update this project?
• How will this project be sustained, for example, make the collection
available to the public, implement the recommendations of a surveyor, etc.?
R0004 n fuatio : %
a
I  ,s w W ", F n. a `:. *- k,1 a,4 5'' a ' :::', '-'441:73,-*,,
' „s y`t `"F rb
{ , _'T , ?,s.: _ ' .%k'. `'c; Tisa (c,
thajit
? 4 . Excellent evidence is found on our web site(www.epls.org),where we began
our NW digital collections using a WSL grant to put our Everett Massacre collection online.
We now have five such exhibits, and several more in progress. We used our previous
preservation grant to build on preservation of panorama negatives that we had begun long ago,
and in turn, we are now building on that grant with this application.
Our Northwest historian, and this project's director, takes an active interest in preservation
issues, and has continued to attend training and workshops to insure that she is basing her
decisions on accurate and up-to-date information.
Once the project has begun, these materials will demand full attention. In preparing and
delivering them for microfilming, they will be checked thoroughly once again and
recommendations will be made if materials or services are needed beyond the scope of this
project. When the project is completed, besides having the valuable microfilms, the original
manuscript items will have been given the best attention they have received since we added
them to the library's collection.
Once we have the material on microfilm,it will be treated as other microfilm, budget allowing
for duplication when necessary and masters placed in archival storage. We also understand
that OCLC charges a fee for storage of archival masters, and this is small enough to be easily
included in our yearly materials budget.
All of the material involved in this request has been available to the public in the past, some
of it in a very restricted environment. Once the preservation work has been accomplished,we
can add some of these manuscripts to our web site, encouraging a wider use than they have
18 of 25 Fr- 5 2
