•
Page 3
Through a Youth Council Project in Grandview, she has worked with other high school age
youth to teach a curriculum that uses comic books as a way to engage middle school students in
activities and conversations about alcohol abuse and peer pressure. By doing this, she promotes a
positive image for young people.
Throughout the project, she has connected with the Grandview community and is a role
model for the children. While the program is wrapping up its fourth session, Shar is part of the
planning process for further implementation.
Shar has participated in parks restoration projects with Snohomish County Parks and
Recreation, volunteered with the Everett Housing Authority and has made trips to Olympia to
speak with elected officials about youth issues.
Shar has also pursued a career in modeling and has volunteered in two runway shows. She
was even able to raise enough money to attend the International Modeling and Talent Association
Convention in Los Angeles earlier this year.
Shar was nominated for this award by her Central Youth Council advisor, Kristian Wiles. As
you can see, she is deserving of this award through her caring for others and extensive
volunteerism.
Liberty Friesen: This 18-year-old senior from Everett High School excels as a leader
through her work as a teacher's assistant and by participating in pep band, marching band and
concert band.
While Libby has worked to overcome obstacles in her life, she serves as a role model to
others. At and early age, she felt the pain of alcohol dependency in her family and the effects it
had on one of the most important people in her life, her mother. In addition, she shared her
mother's pain as a victim of domestic violence from 1995 to 1999. The two found the strength to
leave the situation and move into the Snohomish County Center for Battered Women and then to
transitional housing. Libby is caring, loving and giving.
She has volunteered for the Center for Battered Women for two years, and even at the age
of 16 understood the importance of giving back to her community. Libby is a teen coordinator and
rallied other high school students to help with the Center's annual Chocolate Lovers'Auction. She
also works at the Center's thrift shop. And, she has also made arrangements for speaking
engagements on domestic violence in her school.
While Libby has dealt with much pain in her life, she is focused on her goals. She wants to
pursue a career in nursing and has just been accepted to Everett Community College.
Libby was nominated for this award by Vicci Hilty, of the Snohomish County Center for
Battered Women.
Libby's self-respect, high expectations and determination are reasons the committee
selected her to receive this award.
Tony Slater: This senior at Archbishop Murphy High School has never been satisfied with
simply fulfilling the minimum requirements in any endeavor. Tony's father left his mother when
Tony was just a baby.
