- Do not mix chemical substances unless recommended by the manufacturer. <br />- Use chemicals in well-ventilated areas. Protect skin, eyes, nose, and mouth when necessary b�• wearing <br />gloves, respirator, or other protective clothing. <br />- Keep corrosive liquids away from flammable liquids. <br />- Look for nontoxic or less toxic options (check with the State Department of Ecology �Jffice of Waste <br />Reduction at 1-800-822-9933). <br />- Use all of the product before disposing of the coatainer. <br />4-2.1.6 Bi�IP C1.60 EQiJIPMENT WASHING <br />Large construction equipment and parts should only be cleaned at the contractor's yard, where waste water can be <br />properly ��eated prior to discharge to the sanitary sewer system. <br />Small parts can be cleaned with degreasing solvents and detergents which are reused after filtering or recycled. <br />These solvents may not be discharged into any sewer, sanitary or storm. Further information is available from <br />the Department of Ecology. <br />421J BMP C1.7� SPILL CONTROL PLANNING AND CLEANiJP <br />Construction site supervisors should adopt a spill control plan and identify persons responsible for implenenting <br />the plan if a spill of a dangerous or hazardous waste should occur. Any spill that occurs within the City of <br />Everett, regardless of the size and/or rype of spill, should be reported to the following agencies: <br />City of Everett, 259-8821 (24-hour) <br />Department of Ecoloey, Northwest Region, 649-7000 (24-hour) <br />If the spill of a hazardous substance could reach surface waters, the National Response Center should be <br />contacted at 1-800-424-880? (24-hour number). For spills within salt water, the U.S. Coast Guard must b� <br />contacted at 286-5440. There are fines for failing to not�fy the appropriate authority when a spill occurs. <br />Some of the important components of a spill control plan are: <br />- Establish who to notify in the event of a spill, particularly if it is hazardous. <br />- Provide specific clean-up instructions for different products handled on site. <br />- Assign a person to be in charge oFclean-up assist3nce. <br />- Prepare spill containment and clean-up lists that are easy to find and use. <br />- Post a summary of the clean-up plan at appr�priate locations. <br />- Demobilize a spill it as quickly as possible if it occurs. <br />- Plug inlets and tum off/divert any incoming water ro prevent spills from entering scorm drains or sewers. <br />- Cover the spill with absorbent material such as kitty litter or sawdust. Do not use straw. Dispose of the <br />used absorbent per Ecology or manufacturei's instructions. If the spill is flammable, dispose of as <br />directed by the local fire marshal. <br />- Keep the area well ventilated. <br />� <br />4-2-4 <br />
