J-2.2J BMP B1.60 OUTS[DE STORAGE OF RAW MATERIALS, BY-PRODUCTS OR FINISHED
PRODUCTS (SOLID MA'fERIALS)
This BMP covers solid materials such as:
Gravel, sand, topsoil, compost, logs, sawdust, wood chips;
Lumber and other building materials;
Concrete and metal products.
The business shall select one of the following practices appropriate to the type of material:
- Build a covered, paved area for storage of the material, or;
- Place temporary plastic sheeting over the material or;
- Pave the area and install a drainage system to collec[ stormwater for treatment. Treat the stortnwater pe
the requirements o,' Section 1-3.
Note: [f reiected asQhalt is temporarilv stored on-site before disr, a. I it shall be covered.
With Optioi #3, the paved area shall be sloped in a manner that n, imizes the pooling of water on the site,
particularly with materials that may lear,h pollutants into stortnwater and/or greand water such as compost, logs,
and wood chips. A minimum slope nf 1.5 percent is recommended. The area shall be designed to prevent the
run-on of uncontaminated stormwater from adjacent areas as well as runoff of stormwater from the stockpile
area.
The storm drainaee system shall be designed to minimize the use of catchbasins in the nterior of the storage
area, as catch basins tend to rapidly fill with the manufacturing material. Rather, the area should be sloped [o
drain stormwater to the perimeter where it can be collected, or to intemal drainage "alleyways" w:ere material is
not stockpiled.
d-2Z.8 BMP 51.70 OUTSIDE MANUFAC1fURING ACTMTIES
This BMP applies to those businesses identified in Section 4-1 that plan to or currendy carry out manufacturing
or other potentially polluting activities in an area exposed ro precipitation. The strategies presented below shall
be usad first, to the maximum extent practical, ro prevent stormwater from becoming polluted. If stortnwater
pollution will still occur, stortnwater treatment will be required per Section 1-3.
Strategies to eliminate and/or minimze the potential for polluted stortnwater runoff from any ouiside
manufacturing activiry include:
Alterine the activitv: The preferred option is to alter anv practice that may contaminate surface water or ground
water by either not producing the pollutant to begin with or by controlling t m such a way as to keep it out of the
environment.
Enclosin the activit•: If the practice cannot be altere.d, it should be enclosed in a building to prevent rain from
comine in contact wit:h the activity.
Coverine the activitv: Placing the act9vity inside a building may be infeasible or prohibi[ively expensive. The
cost ot a building can b: significanNy reduced by not covermg the sides, ihus elimmating the need for ventilating
and lighting systems.
Se¢reatine the activitv: Certain parts of the activity may be the wors[ source of pollu2ants. Those parts can ba
segregated and enclosed or covered. 'i-ne drains from these areu can then be dischasg:d to the sanitary sewer,
process treatmen4 or a dead-end sump depending upon available methods znd applicatle permit requirements.
4-2-17.
