industrial complexes where mobi]e equipment is used. If fuelin� is done on-site, the following BbIPs aze <br />required: <br />1. The fuPling facility shall be in compliance with the Uniform Fire Code and the National Elec:ric Code. <br />2. The fuel island shall be paved usins Portland cement concrete, not asphalt, and shall be designed to <br />contain fuel spills. The fuel island shall be desisned as a spill con[ainment pad and sized to prevent the <br />runoff of spilled fuel and [he run-on of storm�vatzr from surroundin� pavement. Parkin� lot stormwater <br />shall be discharsed to the stormwater drainage system, not the sanitary sewer. <br />3. Liquids spilled on the fuel island shall be collected in eithtr uench drains or catchbasins. The drain(s) <br />shali be connected to the sanitary sewer, process ueatment, or a dead-end sump. <br />;. Prior to dischar�e to the sanitary sewer, pad runoff shall be routed through a spill containment vault with <br />a�0 oallon (minimum) live capacity. An isolation valve sha[I be installed in the outlet pipin� from the <br />spill containment vau(t. Whenever site confi�uration allows, the valve control shall be an above-Qround <br />hand-wheel. If only a below oround valve control is feasible, the valve shall still be hand-operable and <br />the lid of the valve control bos shall be briohtly colored to allow for easy identification. <br />Siens indicatins the location and purpose of the valve shall be posted at the fueling island and at the <br />attendant's station. The vault lid shall be desisned to vent vapors to the atmosphere and shall be <br />constructed of non-sparking material. The pavement or sround around the vault lid shall be araded or <br />bermed to prevent thz run-on of s[ormwater runoff from adjacent areas. <br />�. The fuel island shall be covered to prevent the direct entry of precipitation onto the spill containment <br />pad. The roobcanopy shall. at a minimum, cover the spill containment pad and preferably extend several <br />additional feet to prevent windblown rain from enterin�. <br />6. Concrete-filled, steel pipe posts shall be constructed and located where necessary to prevent vehicles <br />enterin� the fueling area from striking the �asoline pumps. <br />Spills should be prevented whenever possible. The owner or ope�ator shall develop an emereency spill <br />cleanup plan (per B�IP S 1.80) and have a desienated responsible person(s) available either on site or on <br />call at all times. Suitable cleanup materials shall be kept on site to allow prompt cleanup should a spill <br />occur. At a minimum, onz 55 ealloa drum fi,ll of appropriate absorbent material shall be kep[ at a <br />location convenient to the fuelin_ island. In addition, one empty 55 gallon drum shall be kzpt on the site <br />for disposal of used absorbent material. Instructions on respondine to an accidental spill shall be made <br />available to all employees and shall be posted in visible locations. <br />8. Employees and customers shall be educated on the proper use of fuel dispensers. Si�ns shall be posted in <br />accordance with the Uniform Fire Code, includine si�ns notine the location of pump shut-off s�vitches. <br />"No Toppins Off' sisns shall also be posted. The au[oma[ic shutoff on the oas noule shall be checked <br />reeularlv to ensure that it works. - <br />EXCEPTiONS <br />In industrial compleses or port facilities where very larse mobile equipment is used such as log loaders, the fuel <br />island need not be covered. However, the pad must be desisned in a manner that prevenu the run-on of <br />stormwater from adjacent areas. The pad must also be desisnzd in a manner that allows the collec[ion of all rain <br />that falls on th�: pad. ` <br />See B�IP S l30 for information or the ttansfer of fuels from a tanker to the stora�e tanks and B�IP S 1.40 <br />reeardin_ the installation of the tanks. <br />-1-2?? B�IP S1.15 DISPOSAL OF OIL FILTERS :��"D OTHER AtiTO�IOTIVE PRODtiCTS <br />Oil filters must be drained while the oil is warm for as lone as possible (2�1 hours minimum) and at an an�le.
