6. SHOP AREA
6.1 Structurul Description
The Shop Area building ie a one-story structure with heavy timber roof
decking supported by sawn and glued lamtnated beams and glued laminated
girdere. Theae beams and girdere are eupported by concre[e piers, with
several concrete maeonry bearing walls at the east end. A frame bearing
wall occurs at [he c:est end of this building. The glued laminated beams
and girders were reportedly reused from a previous building.
6.2 Structural Deficiencies
Thie building has two structural deficiencies requiring corrective action.
The building has insufficient reaistance to lateral forces in the north-
south direction. Although the masonry east wall is adequate the connection
to the roof at the top qf the wall appeara to be inadequate. '1'he frame
west wall is sheathed wit:h plasterboard and providee almost no resistance
to north-soutli laterul forces. Lateral Eorces in the east-wes[ direction
are reaieted adeZua[ely Uy the concrete piers acting as cantilevered
noluta,
Three sawn beams aunporting the roof decking in Che eas[ bay are over-
atresaed and sagging.
6.3 Reconaoendations
Provide increased lateral strength by sheathing the Erame west wall with
plywoed and reinforcing the top and bottom as described in paragraph 5.3
above.
Inetall framing anchors at the top of the masonry oast wall to insure
sufficient shear connection between the roof and wall to transmit la[eral
forces.
Inatall three new 6eams in the east bay to provide suflicient s[rength.
MARTENS/KRATZ 6 tiSOCiATES

 /,
3
bY a l /r .
1
RALPH TZ, P.F.
Partner
'
__, :-., - , _ ,
_> ,' ;'L_'-.. i.._<.-'.,.
