5. PARTS ARL+A
5.1 Structural Description f
7
The Parts Area building ia basically one story freme construction with a
light frame szcond atocy covering the weat part. Th1s upper story is an
extenoion of the second atory of the Service Entry building. The lower
story coneiete of heavy timber roof decking aupported by glued laminated
beaas and freme bearing wulle. The beams are 3upported by three steel
, pipe coluame azd frame bearing'walls. The beams were reportedly reused
from a previous building.
5.2 Structurttl Deficiencies
Tlie major structurul deficiency in thia area is the lack of sufficient
resietance to lsteral forcea in the north-south direction. An additional
de:iciency is the overlonding of the timber decking by the bearing walls
of the eecond story, where thie occurs. There are no signs of serious
deflecCion or failure of che tim6=r decking due to thSs overloading and
it doee not appear to be a aerious deficiency.
5.3 RECOMMENDATZONS
Provlde lateral resistance in the north-south direction by sheathing the
eaet aztd west walls of thie area with plywood, inetalling framing anchors
ai the top of the walls and providing additional bulting to the slab at
the bottom f the walls. 'i'he modifications to the west wall of [his ara
were mentioned in paragraph 4.3 above.
Wc do not recoffinend that anything be done at present co reinforce the
timber decking for the loade of the upper story since it does not appear [o
be ha-ing any aerious eFfects. In the event the condition becomas more
aerioue in the future, consideration should be given [o adding joist
b=tween the glued laminated beams [o support these loads.

k
 `
;U7 cr ;. 'j. c__: ,- .
