DWR CONSULTANTS, Inc., Geo(echnical lnvesfigation
Proposed Sa/eway Gasoline Sfafion, June 8, 2000
• 10 to 15 ft. deea- Compact, brownish gray, better graded, gravel, with sand and
silt in the interstices. Occasional cobble or boulders.
Please note that we experienced shstantial pit caviig on Reterence Site No. 1.
between 5 ft. and 10 ft. deep. The tesi pit log showed the caving at about 1.4
horizontal to 1 vertical with the 5 ft. deep layer above for confinement. I judge that this
layer, wiihout confinement wouid have caved to about 1.75 horizontal to 1 vertical, or
about 30 degrees for its natural angle of repose. This natural angle of repose may be
taken to be equivalent to the "internal angie of iriction" for this material. My inspection
revealed ihat at leasi 30% of the soil particles, by volume, are larger than 3 inches in
size. Our sieve analysis of samples irom Reference Site No. 1 show cobble size
maferial and larger, approximately 70% ol the samples were retained a6ove the 3/4
inch sieve.
Figure 1, on the next page, shows a photograph of the soil (rock) excavated irom
the test pit on the reference site. It is obvious ihat a substantial portion of the material
is larger than 3 inches.
As a part of thi geotechnical investigation, a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
survey was conducted for the purpose of confirming the homogeneity of the soil mass.
Drawing Sheets 1 and 2 show the results from our GPR work. Note that we did find
some minor, near surface anomalies.
