Groundwater
Groundwater seepage levels observed while drilling are shown
on the boring logs. Generally the le•els ranged Erom about five
(5) to seventeen and one-half (17.5) feet below the existing
ground surface. Where encountered, the elevation of seepage
occurred between Elev. 595 and Elev. 606. Slotted standpipes were
installed in Borings B-1, B-2, B-3 and B-6 to allow subsequent
measurement of groundwater levPls. The groundwater seepage level
is not static and fluctuations in the elevation and flow zate
should be expected depending on the amount of rainfall, surface
water runoff, and other factors. Generally the water level is
higher in the wetter winter months.
DISCUSSION AND RECOP44ENDATI02I5
General
In general, three different soil conditions are anticipated at
footing bearinr elevations. In the vicinity of the existiny
building and south to the northeast corner of tdervyn's, new
imported fill will be required to raise the site grade. The
western one-half of Mervyn's and Shops "B" will most likely bear
on dense till. The Drug Emporium bilding, which will bear on
medium dense weathered till is also included in this category.
The third bearing condition occurs at the southeastern quadrant of
Mervyn's sto-e where footings will be founded in existina loose to
medium dense fills. Transitional bearing conditions will occur
between these general areas, and localized zones of differing
conditions should be expected. Recommendati.ons are provided for
the dense till bearing condition and for footings founded on new
or existing fill. Due to the moisture sensitivity of fine-grained
existing fills, it is recommended that they be replaced with
imported granular material for a depth of two feet below the
footing.
:m
