Special consideration should be given to the potential for
differential settlements at the juncture of the existing building
to the new construction. Provided that the new fill is placed and
compacted as recommended and the footings are property installed,
differential settlements should not exceed one-half inch and
should be more than 50 percent complete by the end of
construction. e risk and magnitude of differential settlement
at this location can be further reduced by extending the bearing
down to the dense tills below the new fills. It is understood
that the existing building foundation was overexcavated and
extended to bear on the very dense till soils.
Site Preparation ad Earthwork
Bui.lding and pavement areas should be stripped and cleared of
all trees, surface vegetation, root mats, organic matter and any
other deleterious material. It is anticipated that a stripoing
depth of four to six inches will be required. Stripped materials
should be removQd from the site or. stockpiled for later use in
landscaping. Stripped materials shoulfl not be mixed with any
materials to be used as structural fill.
Following the stripping operation, the ground surface where
structural fill, foundations, or slabs are to be placed should be
proofrolled. All proofrolling should be performed under the
observation of a representative of ECI. Soil in loose or soft
areas should be removed and replaced with structural fill to a
depth that will provide a stable base beneath the general
structural fill.
Structuraly fill is defined as any imported new fill or
recompacted existing fill placed under buildings, roadways, slabs,
pavements, or any other load bearing areas. On-site silty sand
till soils were near their optimum moisture content at the t`_me `
our exploration, and may be used as structural f; l provided tie
grading operations are conducted during dry weather.
