The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) cross connection regulations require water
purveyors, such as Everett, to maintain saFe drinking water by taking precautions to ensure that fire
prtection water in both cor.,mercial end residential sprinkler systems does not backflow into the public
system. In the past, single check vals were considered as an adequate backflow device for commercial
properties. However, DOH has determined that double check detector assemblies (DCDA) are the
minimum accenfable backflow protection device for commercial fire protection systems. Some
commercial bw..iings in Everett still have single check-valves instailed, which now must be upgraded to a
DCDA for commercial fire services when new construction is planned that will affect flre services. This
additionai protection is necessary to adhere to DOIi regulations and ensure safe drinking water.
Sincerely,
 "`.-kl.-,.,,
Tim Markham, WQCO
Cross Connedion Specialist
cc: Permit Services Manager Paul McKee, Assistant Fire Marshal Jim Venturo, Utilities Records Manager
Verl Sly, Meg Haley
I
CITY OF EVERETT • 3200 Cedar Street • Everett, WA 98201 • (425) 257-88Q0 • Fax (425) 257-8882
