Ms. Cunningham
January 24, 1990
Page Two
5. S:ructural complexity of tb wetland should
imgrove with the addition of wildlife habitat
features such as downed logs.
6. The aesthetic value of the landscape should
increase.
7. An understanding of the functions and importance
of wetlands should be promoted through an
, interpretive display or signs."
I found the site planted with the correct species, quantity
and location. While only two growing seasons have passed
since the wetland was created, it appears that the desired
plant communities are developing as anticipated.
As shown conceptually on the original wetland enhancement
planting plan (1987b) , four check dams have been installed
sequentially along the streatt. corridor leading from the
storm drainage culvert co the wetland. All were functioning
to slow the velocity of the incoming stormwater and were not
experiencing excessive bank erosion or dam dEterioration at
this time. The bank area disturbed during construction is
becoming re-established from the surrounding plant
environment.
The garbage and debris in the buffer area has been removed
and the plants installed per our May 19, 1989 planting plan.
At our direction, some existing logs have been allowed to
remain, adding desired structural complexity to the wildlife
habitat as well as increasing the bufrer density. As air
temperatures preclude hydroseeding at this time of year, the
area should be seeded in sprinq in conjunction with the
landscaping of the adjacent site if necessary.
An interpretive sign can be an effective way to educate the
public of the importance and function of natural resources.
This feature was given as an original goal and objective.
However, due to the amount of garbage and debris pulled from
this site and the characteristic of the surrounding
landuses, vandalism of an interpretive display is a concern.
Under these circumstances, unless there is some type of
control over the site, an interpretive sign may be .
susceptible to van3alism and may not be appropriate for this i
site.
