This investigator, Jim Nagle, was working on duty at the 2800 block of Colby Ave. in
Everett. Upon hearing the dispatch for a 1-11-structure fire, I self dispatched to the fire
scene for the purpose of taking part in any origin and cause investigation that may arise.
FACTS PRESENTED:
(The folfowing information is a result of interviews with Robert Sewell and Timothy
Sewell. See written statement attached.)
On June 21, at approximately 1100 hours, Akeem Sewell, an occupant of the house,
placed a metal pot filled with cooking oii on the right front burner of the kitchen stove.
He then turned the stove on to heat the oil. His intention was to cook french -fries.
After he finished cooking, Akeem mistakenly rotated the wrong heat-control dial in an
attempt to tum off the stove. Thinking that the stove was now off, Akeem then left the
house. At approximately 1135, Robert Sewell, another occupant of the house, went
upstairs to the main floor of the house from the downstairs portion. Upon reaching the
main floor, Robert noticed that there was a fire in the kitchen on the stove. With further
investigation, Robert saw that the fire was coming from a pot on the stove. He
attempted to smother the fire by placing another pot on the burning one. When this was
unsuccessful, he then discharged a 10bc fire extinguisher on the fire. With conditions in
the kitchen becoming untenable due to heavy smoke, Robert was forced to evacuate
the kitchen. He called the fire department, went to the back yard, and continued to fight
the fire with a garden hose until fire units arrived on scene.
ACTIONS TAKEN:
Upon arrival at the scene, I saw fire crews in front of the house with hose lines on the
front lawn. There was no sign of smoke in the area. I went immediately to the
command post as directed by Fire Marshall Burns. He informr.i me that he had
interviewed Robert Sewell, and had been given the information mentioned above. He
then informed me that the fire was out, and I could begin the origin and causs
investigation. I then proceeded to the front of the house. Arriving at the front yard, I
saw the occupants going in to the back yard and informed them that they must remain
outside of the house until the investigation was complete. I then met Captain Don
Shwab at the front entrance of the house. He led me into the house and up to the
kitchen. He then pointed out to me the area on and around the stove where the fire had
been. Shortly thereafter, investigator Galovic joined me. He took the lead position in
the investigation.
