• We began the investigation by examining the areas of the house distant to the point of
origin. The sliding glass door was open. The power to the house had been tumed off at
the circuit breaker box. The kitchen was in a state of disarray. There were cabinet
doors on the ground, a broken window above the sink, and bumed material on the floor,
around the stove, and in the sink. We examined the stove and found a metal pot--
approximately 2-quart capacity--with heavy black charring. We also noticed that the
right front heating element on top of the stove showed signs of heavy heat damage.
The heat control dial, which controts the right front heating element, was in the ON
position. It was set at number 7 out of 10 heating levels. To the right of the stove there
were small appliances that were badly damaged from high heat exposure. The items to
the left of the stove were damaged lass extensively. Behind the stove on the wall was a
V-shaped burn pattern, and above this was wooden cabinets. The cabinets also
exhibited bum pattems radiating away from the right side of the stove. VJe also
examined the ceiling above the stove and found "clean burn" patterns. The entire
ceiling in the kitchen was black from the fire. The light fiure on the ceiling was melted.
Inspector Galovic and I took photographs of the scone, and drew a field sketch with
corresponding measurements of the kitchen. We then examined a smoke detector
located in the hailway and determined that it was inoperable. We used a heat scanner
to scan the area involved in fire for heat. Finally, we performed follow up interviews with
the owner and other occupants. I then left the scene with inspector Galovic remaining
on scene.
OTHER INFORMATION:
The first in Engie Company reported that they did not hear a smoke detector when
entering the house to fiqht the fire. They also reported that there had been a towel rack
mounted on the wall just above the stove, and that the towel was involved in the firs.
The juvenile, Akeem, who had started the fire, was not present at scene.
WITNESSES:
Owner:
Timothy Sewell BIacWMale
2801 Forest View Dr. Everett WA. 98203
H 425 355 9294
W425 388 7319
