Enclosed useable space under the stairway requires one -hour construction on the
enclosed side (5/8" type "x" GWB with framing at 16" oc max.).(3306-1)
9. Handrails shall satisfy the following (3306-i):
a. Provide continuous handrail for stairs with 4 or more risers.
b. Handrails shall be 34 to 38 inches above the nosing of the treads.
C. The handgrip portion of handrails shall be not less than 1-1/2" and not more than 2"
in cross sectional dimension.
e. The ends of handrails shall be returned or terminate in newelposts or safzty terminals
10. Provide 36" high protective guard rail for decks, porches balconies, raised floors,(more
than 30" above the grade or walking surface below), and open and glazed side(s) of
stairways landings and ramps. Open guard rails shall have intermediate rails or
ornamental pattern such that a sphere 4" in diameter may not pass through.(1712)
11. Provide detail of attic ventilation type, size and location. Show the required net area
calculations assuming approximately 75% of the vent area is net area unless the actual
net area is given by the manufacturer. The required ventilation area ratio is 1/150 of
attic area or 1/300 of attic area if at least half of the vent area is more than 3' above
eave vents (providing the remaining portion of the vent area). The openings shall be
covered with corrosion -resistant wire mesh with mesh openings of 1/4" in
dimension.(3205-c)
12. Show under floor ventilation opening size and locations equal to 1 sq. ft. for each 150
sq.ft. of under floor area. Show the required net area calculation assuming
approximately 75% of the vent area is net area unless the actual area is given by the
manufacturer. Openings shall be as close to comers as practical and shall provide cross
ventilation. The required area of such openings shall be approximately equally
distributed along the length of at least two opposite sides. The openings shall be
covered with corrosion -resistant wire mesh with mesh openings of 1/4" in
dimension.(3205-c)
13. For fireplace chimney specify the following:
a. Chimneys shall extend 2' above any part of building within 10'.(T37-B) Show
dimensions on elevations.
b. Provide a note indicating that the woodstove is a listed and labeled appliance.(UMC
502 & 504)
d. Provide detail for masonry chimney showing reinforcement and anchorage. Verticl
reinforcing must extend the full height of the chimney from the footing to the
chimney cap. Show 4" diameter steel ties Qa 18" O.C. around the vertical bars.
Provide anchorage at the ceiling/floor line. (3704)
e. The masonry chimney is over 8' high above the roof cave line, therefore the
standard reinforcing and roof/floor anchors in section 3704 do not provide adequate
lateral resistance. Design the chimney to resist earthquake and wind loads.
Provide calculations prepared by a licensed WA ST structural engineer.
