 CO ( i
JAN 3 0 2003
CITY OF EVFf[TT
EnqlpeCinp/Public 56rvices
Everett Public Works lan 28'' 2003
Dear Sirs,
Six months ao I purchased a house at 4717 Gardner Ave. I purchased the home as a
hobby project and then to live in it. This is pretty much my one-man project. I have
enjoyed the experience. 1 had a chance meetinwith the original builder a few weeks
after I purchased it. He told me that he and his brother built the house in 1961 and that
tle house was essentially the same as he had built it. Althoush he did not provide
documentation to his statements I had no reason not to believe him. The footprint ef the
building is the same today as he had built it in 1961. I did not exactly know what I was
going to do with the building as I started the project. I made day-to-day decisions and
had fun doing it. One of my early decisions was to install a fireplace in the bedroom and
purchase a gas fireplace insert into the wood burning masonry living room fireplace. The
fireplace dealer installed the fireplace units and [ apologize to the City of Everett for not
getting permission to do so. I then decide to remove a non-bearing wall that separated
two bedrooms to make one larger master bedroom and added a non-bearing partition wall
to form a walk in closet. Within the master bedroom I also moved the vanity sink 4 feet
to the south. I removed a Sft window and replaced it with a Sft dooc I also replaced a
total of four 4ft windows and replaced them vith 4ft doors. 1 increased the size of the
reading room by rcmoving the closet and removing the tuU in the adjoining bathroom. l
took out the non-structural ceiling rafters and vaulted the ceiling. I am replacing the old
linoleum flooring and replacing it with tile and carpet. Again I apologize to the City of
Gverett for making these cosmetic changes without pernission. I decided to replace the
overhead electrical service to underground service. This work is being done by
Snohomish County PUD. The original location of the meter was in the back of the house
and now it will be moved to the front. I did not move the location of the electrical panel.
It remains today where it has always been. I will still have the same 200-amp service that
the house liad originally. I then decided to build a storage closet under the eaisting deck
to tle north. As the deck had been standing for 40 years so I found no reason to do
anything Uut Uuild a few non-bearing valls under the old strucwre. The deck was made
up of 2x10 at 16" OC. The storage closet concept was dien made bigger to make for a
TV room offthe dovnstairs den; witch did increase the livinnarea by some 150 sq.ft +/-.
Again, I apoloize to the City of Everett for making these non-structural alterations, all
within the original footprint of the building. In the main grcat room [ made some non-
structural changes. 1 reduced the size of the west window from ]0 wide to 4ft. 1 took
out an S R alum. vindow and replaced it with an 8° bay window. I replaced two Sft
slidinglass doors and replaced them with rivo Sft, rench glass doors. I also vaulted the
ceiling without altering any of the structural elements of the house. The existing deck
rapped around three sides of the kitchen area. I framed valls under the existing deck,
witliout altering the footprint of the building. This created an extra 135sf+/- of livin
7
