Five backhoe <br />test pits were excavated and soil conditions on the adjacent slope <br />were observed. This letter presents our findings and recommenda- <br />tions. <br />INTRODUCTION <br />When we arrived at the site, the foundation area had been excavated <br />and the forms were in place. The planned residence is to be a one <br />and two story wood structure with crawl space and a slab on grade <br />garage floor. <br />The ground around the planned house slopes gently on the east, west <br />and south, but on the north side, the ground slopes down steeply <br />about twenty (20) feet north of the northernmost part of the <br />foundation. The steep slope is about twenty (20) feet high and is <br />about 1,5H:1V. A swampy gully is at the toe of the steep slope. <br />SOIL CONDITIONS <br />Fill was found in all the test pits, but native soil is exposed in <br />a limited area on the east edge of the foundation excavation. The <br />fill is a sandy to clayey silt with locally abundant wood and <br />
