y
_ .....
t" H
H
..
Conference Report
Mervyn's
o x p
February 13,1992
HH
3OS
Page 2
H t7
M R S
The area of this building is approximately 116,427 square feet. This is 20,427 square feet over
the allocated amount of 96,000 square feet to make this building fall under Type II-N
z H
(N meaning all construction in concealed spaces be "non-combustible").
SSOE and the inspectors preliminarily worked out the following compromise (this solution is
be for
o H
preliminary due to the absence of the fire marshall, who is out of town and will solicited
ty CA
jtp
his input on Tuesday, 2-I8-92).
ED
y Ho ca
1. Compartmentalization of the structure to less than 96,000 square feet. This can be readily
accomplished by providing fire walls to the deck at some stockrooms including 1-1/2
hour doors. The dock and loading area at the freight elevator is already
compartmentalized about 2,000 square feet.
2. The possible addition of a fire rated overhead rolling shutter at the entrance to the mall.
This would be in lieu of the existing rolling grill.
The existing stockroom wall framing now extends to the deck and to make it two-hour rated
would require the addition of 2 layers of 5/8" Type "X" gypsum board both sides, floor to deck,
1-1/2 hour doors at all openings and 2 hour fire dampers at all duct penetrations (cost item).
Another item discussed at the meeting was insulation at roofs and walls. The Washington
C-' Energy Code states all cavity walls reworked during construction must be brought in line with
"+ the code. Since our existing exterior walls are concrete block no insulation is required. On the
roof the code states that any roof taken down to sheathing must meet an R-30 when replaced.
Brian Ritchhart reviewed roof submittal and passed on marking that insulation must be as
specified. The roofing spec calls for insulation installation to meet applicable code. Everett
inspectors were besieged by the roofing contractor to require only that the roof be replaced to
match what was removed. Everett okayed that assuming Mervyn's was providing a furred and
insulated exterior wall. Mervyn's is not wanting to fur and insulate all exterior walls since 85+%
is existing concrete block at stockrooms
As stated earlier the fire protection issue is a preliminary solution and until the fire marshall has
v his input, will not be final. Depending on how the fire marshal views this solution will indicate
w if another trip to Everett by SSOE is warranted.
Submitted: Kim Procunier
1+ KP/rsr
_ Attachment
VCR7
SSOE, INC. • 2DO MOTT FOUNDATION BUILDING • FLINT, MICHMAN 48502
I "
