The following information is from the Uniform Buiiding Code (1997 edition) as it applies to daycare. <br />305 Requirements tor Group E Occupancfes. <br />305.1 Group E Occupancies Defined. Group E occupancies shall be: <br />Division 1. Any building used (or educational purposes through the 12'" grade by 50 or more persons for more <br />lhan 12 hours per week or (our hours in any one day. <br />Division 2. Any bui�ding used for educational purposes through the 12'" grade by less than 50 persons for more <br />than 12 hours per week or tour hours in any one day. <br />Division 3. Any building or portion Ihereof used for day care purposes tor more than six persons. <br />EXCEPTION: Family child day care homes shall be considered Group R, Divisfon 3 Occupancies. <br />For occupancy separalions, see Table 3-B <br />305.2 Construction, Height and Allowable Area. <br />305.2.1 General. Building or parts of buildings classed in Group E because of the use or character of lhe occupancy <br />shail be limited to the types of construclion set (oRh in Table 5•B and shall not excee�, In area or height, the limits <br />specified in Section 504, 505 and 506, except that Ihe area me�� be fncreased by 50 percent wher ths maximum <br />travet distance specified in Section 1004.2.5 is reduced by 50 percent. <br />30522 Atmospheric separation rzquirements. <br />305.2.2.1 DeliniHons. For the purpose ol this chapter and Section 1007.3, the foliowing definitions are applicable: <br />COMMON ATMOSPHERE exists between rooms, spaces or areas wilhin a building that are not separated by an <br />approved smoke- and draft-stop barrier <br />SEPARATE ATMOSPHERE exists between rooms, spaces or areas that are separated by an approved smoke <br />barrier. <br />SMOKE BARRiER consists of walls, partitions, iloors and openings iherein as will prevenl ihe iransmission of <br />smoke or gases through ihe conslruction. See Seclion 905. <br />305.222 General Provisions. The provisions ol this section appiy when a separate exit system is required in accordance <br />with Section 1007.3. <br />Walls, parlitions and floors forming aIl or part of an atmospheric separation shall be as required by Section <br />9052.3. Glass lighls of approved wired glass sel in steel frames may be installed in such walls or partitions. <br />All automatic•closing fire assemblies installed in the atmospheric separation shali be aclivated by approved <br />smoke detectors. <br />The specific requiremenls of lhis section are not intended to prevent the design or use of other systems, <br />equipment or techniques that will effectively prevent the products of combustion from breaching ihe atmospheric <br />separation. <br />305.2.3 Special provlslons. Rooms in Division t and 2 Occupancies used for kindergarten, lirst- or second-grade pupils, <br />and Division 3 Occupancies shall not be located above or below ihe first slory. <br />EXCEPTIONS: <br />1 Basemenis or stories having floor levels located within 4 feet (1219 mm), measured vertically, trom <br />adjacenl yround level at the point of exit discharge, provided the basemenl or slory has exterior exit doors <br />at that level. <br />2 In buildings equipped wilh an aulomatic sprinkler syslem �hroughout, rooms used for kindergarten, first- <br />and second-grade children or lor day-care purposes may be located on the second story, provided there <br />are at ieast two exit doors into separate means of egress systems as delined in Seclicn 1007.3. <br />3 Division 3 Occupancies may be located above lhe first story in buildings of Type I construclion and in <br />Types II-F.R., II One-hour and III One•hour conslruction, subject to the limitation of Section 506 when: <br />3.1 Divisio�� 3 Occupancies containing more than 12 children per story sha�l not be located above the <br />fouAh floor; and <br />/� <br />CITY OF EVERETT BUILDING DEPARTMENT 3200 CEDAR ST., EVERE7T WA 98201 425-257•8870 <br />
