In ef(iciency dwelling units, hotel <br />�uiles and in hotel and congregate residence sleeping rooms, deleclors shall be located on the ceiling or wall ot <br />the main room or esch sleeping room. When sleeping rooms within an efficiency dwelling unit or hotel suite are <br />on an upper level, lh:+ deteclor shall ba placed at the ceiling of tho upper level in close proximity to ihe stairway. <br />When acluated, the de:ector shall sound an alarm audible within the sleeping area of the dwelling unit or <br />congregale residence, hotel suile, or sleeping room in which it is localed. <br />310.9.1.6 Location within famfiy chiid day care homes. In family child day care homes operable detectors shall be <br />localed in all sleeping and napping areas. When the family child day care home has more than one story, and in <br />family child day care homes with basements, an operable �ietector shail be installed on each story and in the <br />basemenl. In (amily child day care homes where a story or basement is split into two or more levels, the smoke <br />detector shall be installed in the upper level, except that when the lower level contains a sleeping or napping <br />araa, an operable detector shall be located on each level. When sleeping rooms are on an upper level, the <br />delector shall be placed at the ceiling of the upper level in close proximity to the stainvay. In family child day care <br />homes where the ceiling height of a room open to the hallway serving the bedrooms exceeds lhat of ihe hallway <br />by 24 inches or more, smoke detectors shali be installed In the hallway and the adjacent room. Detectors shall <br />sound an alarm audible in all areas of lhe building. <br />310.92 Sprinkler and standpipe systems. When required by Section 9042.1 or other provisions ot this code, automatic <br />sprinkler systems and standpipes shail be designed and installed as specified in Chapter 9. <br />310.10 Fire Alarm Systems. Group R, Division 1 Occupancies shatl be provided wilh a manual and aulomatic tire aiarm <br />system in apartment houses ihree or more stories in height or containing 16 or more dwelling units, in hotels three <br />or more slories in height or containing 20 or more guest rooms and in congregate residences three or mon, stories <br />in heighl or having an occupant load of 20 or more. A tire alarm and communication system shall be provided in <br />Group R, Division 1 Occupancies located in a high-rise building. <br />EXCEPTIONS: <br />1. A manual fire alarm system need not be provided in buildings not over lwo stories in height when all <br />individual dwelling unils and contiguous attic and crawl spaces are separated from each olher and public <br />nr common areas by at least one-hour tire•resistive occupancy separalions and each individual dwelling <br />unit or guesl room has an exit directly to a public way, exit court or yard. <br />2. A separate tire alarm system need not be provided in buiidings that are protecled throughoul by an <br />approved supervised lire sprinkler syslem having a local alarm to noli(y ail occupanis. <br />The alarm signal shall be a distinctive sound that is not used tor any other purpose other ihan the fire alarm. <br />Alarm•signaling devices shall produce a sound that exceeds the prevailing equivalent sound level in the room or <br />space by 15 decibels minimum, or exceeds any maximum sound level with a duration of 30 seconds minimum by <br />5 decibels minimum, whichever is louder. Sound levets tor alarm signals shall be 120 decibels maximum. <br />Fur the purpose of this section, area separation walls shall not detine separate buildings. <br />370.11 Heating. Dwelling units, guest rooms and congregate residences shall be provided with heating facilities capable <br />of maintaining a room temperature of 70°F (21°C) ai a point 3 feet (914 mm) above lhe floor in all habitable rooms. <br />310.12 Special Hazards. Chimneys and heating apparalus shall conlorm to Ihe requiremenis of Chapler 31 and the <br />Mechanical Code. <br />The storage, use and handling of llammable and combustible liquids in Division 1 Occupancies shall be in <br />accordance with the Fire Code. <br />In Division 1 Occupancies, doors leading into rooms in which Class I flammable liquids are stored or used shall be <br />protecled by a fire assembly having a one-hour fire•protection rating.
