On-site parking for
employees will increase from about 450 parking spaces to about 1,000 parking spaces—
an increase of more than 120% over the existing supply —while the number of day-time
on-campus employees will only increase from 906 to 1,653 —an increase of about 80%
over the existing population. Therefore, the potential for employees parking on
neighborhood streets should significantly decrease.
Some County generated traffic currently uses neighborhood streets to access the County
facilities. Some of this traffic will likely continue to use neighborhood streets. However,
with the proposed entrance to the 1,200 space underground parking garage directly onto
Pacific Avenue at the signalized intersection of Rockefeller, this intrusion to the
neighborhood may be minimized. Traffic exiting the garage at this location could be
forced to turn left or right onto Pacific Avenue further protecting the neighborhood.
Traffic in adjacent neighborhoods will also be reduced because many of the county
employees that currently park on neighborhood streets will stop doing it. Many
employees park in the street because there is a lack of parking available in the existing
garage. The proposed plan will increase employee parking from 450 spaces to 1000
spaces. This will lead to reduced parking and traffic in the adjacent neighborhoods.
In total, it is predicted that traffic on neighborhood streets south of Pacific Avenue will be
reduced by about seven percent in the afternoon peak hour.
