BUILDING CODE APP'.:AL BOARD HEARING
Thomas M. and Pamela 14cKee, re garage at 1 I 15 Hoyt Ave.
September 12, 1994
PRESENT:
Board Members: Jeff Moore (Chair), John Hooper (Vice chair), Mike Nickerson,
Jim Gaffney, John Jones
City Staff: Tim Tyler, Mazgaret McLeod
Apnellants: Tom McKee, Pam McKee
Present as interested party: Dana Meeks (neighbor to de north)
The hearing was convened at 8:40 by Appeal Board Chair 7eff Moore. He explained
that the Board would he.r the McKees' reasons for their appeal and that there would be
time for public comment and for asking questions before the Board makes its decision.
TOM McKEE explained that the property is cunently for sale and they can't afford to
put more money into it righ[ now, also it would drive up the price. They would like to
let the new owner have all the options about what to do with the garage. The property
is a duplex, [wo 3-bedroom units, and he would like to preserve the ability to have 4
off-street pazking spaces. Street pazking is limited, there has been street pazking space
reserved for handicapped. He pointed out that reducing the number of spaces of
offstreet parking would force the duplex parking onto the street and would hurt the
neighborhood in the long run.
The McKees explained that there are a couple of interested purchasers, one is
considering conversion to a single family, but a duplex is more likely. Both are
interested in keeping the garage.
They are aggressively marketing the property, just this week they have been
interviewing new mazketing agents. Also they are gomg ahead with siding on the nor:h
side of the house this week. Real estate agents have advised them a;ainst making any
changes in the garage at this time, saying tha[ it would be better to leave ogtions to a
new owner.
PAM bicKEE said Ihat if they have work done themselves i[ means hiring a contractor,
which they have had bad luck with. They plan to market die property to contractors
who could do their own work.
DANA MELKS said that there is no longer any handicapped pazking. She says the
garage cannot be repaired, but must come down, that she fears it may fall down on her
garage, damaging her car or ir aring her children.
Both DANA MEEKS and the NIcKEEs made comments about the history of
disagreements over this properry.
Chair JEFF MOORE re-direc[ed conversation to specifics about the garage.
JUHN HOOPER asked how long the property has been for sale, and whether his
understanding was correct that there wiil now be new agents marketing the property.
