Van Derheken and Keck Properties Geotechnica! Services Report
Lorimer Road Everett Washington
Due to extreme wet weather conditions and saturation of near surface clay soils it was decided to
not excavate the site soils and install the lagging between the soldier piles at this time. When the
soils are excavated for the lagging, in order to reduce costs, they will be placed and compacted
behind the soldier pile wall instead of importing more suitable soils to the site. Under the current
weather conditions most of the excavated soils are too wet to be placed and compacted in any
manner. Therefore, the owner is to recover the area of the landslide with plastic sheeting and
monitor the landslide to verify that installation of the soldier piles and plastic sheeting has
stopped all movement. If movement is stopped the excavating and lagging will be delayed until
drier conditions prevail. If movement is not stopped the excavating and lagging should proceed
immediately.
The wall was to be located in the approximate middle of the two rockeries in order balance the
cut and fill required on the site. Due to access difficulties McDowell required that the wall be
moved closer to the upper rockery. lltis may result in the need to export some of the excavated
material when the lagging is installed.
Based upon inspection of the contractor's operations it is our opinion that the soldier pile
installations were completed in accordance with the structural engineering desibm for the project.
Once conditions improve to the point where the excavation and lagging can proceed, this office
should be contacted to schedule further inspection of this work.
Respectfully submitted,
Gary1A.Fwers, P.G., P.E.G.
Principal Engineering Geologist
Gary A.
