Geotechnical Engineering Study Page 7.6
00-2267 Three Story Addition - 500 Laurel Street, Everett
January 31, 2001
Based on the er.ploratory data it is also our professional opinion that the soil
beneath this site generally fall into what the UBC describes as a"stiff soil" profile.
This is a material where the Standard Penetration Test N-values typically range
betwees 15 and 50 per foot. Thus, according to Table 16-J of the 1997 UBC the
ite is considered to have the follwing profile designation:
■ 1997 UBC "stiff' soil profile = S
According to Tables 16-Q and 16-R the following seismic design coefficients should
also be used:
e 1997 UBC Seismic coefficient Ce = 0.33
■ 1997 UBC Seismic coefficient C = 0.45
iquefaction
Based on the observed soil conditions, given the generally increasing density
observed with depth, the small cohesive clay content of the bulk of the in-situ soils,
and the lack of an established shallow water level ttiat might be capable of surging
and saturating the shallow soi, these soil do not apear to us to be susceptible to,
or at any significant degree of risk of, liquefaction during an earthquake. In our
opinion the risk of liquefaction, and liquefaction related settlement, may be
considered very low to negligible and does not in our professional opinion pose a
threat to the construction process or the completed :tructure.
Slone Stability
Generai: As part af our work on this project we also evaluated the gnsral
stability of the sites' wEstern bluff sl,e. From the subsurface data acquired from
ourexploratory boring and data review, ourvisual axamination ofthe seils exposed
across the f2ce of the site slope and on the surrounding properties, and our
geological review, it is believed likely that the bulk of the materials beneatn the site
