Geotechnical Engineering Study <br />00-2267 Three Story Addition - 500 Laurel St.eet, Everett <br />January 31, 2001 <br />� <br />Page 27 � <br />slope comprise dense to very dense silty sand to sandy silt soils, and stiff to hard <br />silt or clayey silt soils. <br />Visual Slope Evaluation: Our representative conducted a visual evaluation of <br />the site slope by walking over the as much of t.he exposed surFace as reachable. <br />In addition, we also conducted a relatively close visual evaluation �f tne soils <br />exposed in the near vertical cut along the toe of the slope adjacent to th� railroad <br />� ight-of-way. <br />The prmary purpose ofthis visual e�ialuation was to attempt to find visible evidence <br />of any suficial sioughing, erosion: I damage or deep seated failure. We noted <br />that there ar.� several "older' large diameter trees and tree stumps on the property <br />which exhibited trunks of up to, or more than, two feet in diameter. Some of these <br />trees are also growiny straight and vertical and exhibit vi�tually n� visible svidence <br />of downslope cfeep action: (This is considered to be one piece of evidence that <br />the site s!ope was, and is, stable.) <br />Our visual evaluation did provide sorrse evidence of localized erosional damagt <br />across the upper near vertical bluff slope, and on the lower part of the slope by the <br />railroad. We also observed some evidence that shallow landslide activity has <br />occurred in the recent past on the central and slightly flatter slope area on this, and <br />the adjacent property to the southwest. We did not observe any visible evidence <br />of a deep seated failure, but we understand that a draina�ge induced slope failure <br />did occur several hundred feet to the south on a nearbr property only a couple of <br />years ago. (The geotechnical enginEaring for the repair was apparently carried out <br />by Geoenginee�s of Redmond, Washington an behalf of the C;ity.) <br />Computer Analysis: We also conducted an analysis of the approximate slope <br />configuration based on the available relatively crude topc�raphic data generated <br />on the local topographic quad map of the area. We also developed a series of <br />whatwe believe are reasonably cor�servative soil parametE�s forthe several "majar" <br />strata forming this slope. Based on the encountered subsurface soils, and as <br />generally depicted in the boring log in Appendix A, wE estimate thatthere are about <br />six rnajor soil strata forming and underlying the site slope. For our analysis we <br />assigned these soil the following tabulated parameters: <br />3 <br />
