Geotechnical Engineering Study Page 31
00-2267 Three Story Addition - 500 Laurel StreCt, Everett
January 31, 2001
nearest point of the modified residence will be approximately twenty-two and one
half feet (22.5) feet away from the crest of the westem bluff slope.
The existing site topography between the residence and the crest of the slope is
gently sloping to relatively flat and is covered with sod !awn or "wild" native
vegetation or landscaping. In addition, along the westem end of the gravel
driveway there is an already constn.icted retaining wall system that preserves the
integrty of?he site and maintains "unused" space between it and the slope crest.
I addton, there is a chain link fnce set between abut five and eighteen ! 8) feet
back from the slope crest that separates the residence, driveway and lawn areas
from the slope crest.
Given the considerable age of the existing residence, and in consideratien of the
generally positve results of our slope stability evaluation, it is our professional
opinion that the area between the residence anci the crest of the westem biuff slope
is stable and competent, particularly if it remains undisturbed. Since the proposed
construction effort is to remain at least twenty (20) feet away from the slope crest
it appears to us that the slope area will not be disturbed in any way. Consequently,
it is our professional opinion that the existing approximately twenty-three (23) foot
wide building setback from the crest of the westem bluff slope is adequate. This
distance provides more than sufficient space for pedestrian an equipment access
to the proposed construction area and is sufficient to prevent any structural loads
from being imposed on, or through, the face of the bluff slope.
Site Drainape
General: Although no established groundwater elevation or roundwater
seepage was encountered at shallow depth during our field exploration, it is
possibie that a fluctuating groundwater or seepage level could be encountered
during the lifetime of the projact, particularly durin the wetter winter months
(typically October through May). In addition, changes in rainfall amounts, srface
drainage or other factos can cause these levels to fluctuate.
I Based on observed subsurface conditions at the site, we do not perceive that
groundwater or seepage i likely to have a detrimental impact on the overall
I construction. However, we believe i; is prudent to install both short and long-term
drainage control measures as part of project design and construction.
5
