Geotechnical Engineering Study Page 39
00-2267 Three Story Addition - 500 Lauref Street, Everett
Januery 31, 2001
APPENDIX A
d0-2267
Field Exploration Program
Our field exploration was performed December 7, 2000 and comprised one
explorator,r boring. The boring extended to a maximum depth of approximately
thirty-nine (39) feet below the existing site grade. The field explora!ion was
performed using a truck mounted dril! provided an operated by oursubcontractor,
R 8 R Drilling of Puyallup. Hollow stem, continuous flight, augers +vere used to
maintain an open borehoie and to allow for acquisition of samples with a standard
spilt spoon sampler.
The approximate boring locations were deterrnined by hand taping from the
existing residence. The boring elevation was approximately determined by eye with
respect to a temporary benchmark, the top of concrete slab at the northwestem
corner of the exiting garage, at an assumed elevation of one hundreJ (100) feet.
The locations and elevations of the borings should be onsidered accurate only to
the degree implied by the methods used.
The field exploration was continuously monitored by an nneer from our firm vho
maintained a log of each boring. Our representative classifed the soil encountc•red
in the borings, obtained representative soil samples and observed pertinent site
features. Soils were classified visually in the field in general accordance with the
Unified Soil Classifcation System (USCS) which is summarized on Plate 9, Legend.
The number and apprc, ximate locatian of each of the borings are shown on the Sita
Plan, Plate 2. ihe final log, presented on Plate 10, represents our interpretation
iof the field log and the results of selective laboratorv testing of representative soil
samples. The stratification lines on the logs represent the approximate boundary
Ibetween soil types. In actuality, the transition may be more gradual or more severe.
Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) were perFormed at incremeit'cal depths in the
I exploratory boring. The test involves driving a standard split spoon sampler into the
ground at the botiom of the augered hole to retrieve represeiztative samples of the soils
