Geotechnical Engineering Study Page 43
UO-2267 Three Storr Addition - 500 Laurel 5treet, Everett
January 31, 2001
Noisture Cntent
Moisture contenttests were performed on several representative samples obtained
fram the exploratory excavations. The purpose of this test is to approximately
ascerfain the materials' in-situ maisture content. The infomatiori obtained assists
us by providing a qualitative correlation with soil strength and cornpress'sbility. The
results of these tests are included at the appropriate sample depth or the boring
log.
Grain Size Distribution
Detailed grain size analyses were conducted on three oi ii e retrieved samples to
help determine the ovarall distribution af the soil's paticles. 'rlie information gained
from these analyses help to provide a detailed de .cription anci classification of the
in-place materials. In tum, this information helps us to underst,nd how the in-place
materials will react to construction activity, grounclwater seeaage and foundation
loading. The results are prPsented on Plates 11 iwrough '!3, Gradation Curves.
Classification symbols ars also provided as part f the appropriate indiidual
sample descriptions n tFe boring logs.
Atterberg LimEts
Une test was perforrned on a representative sample of the more "fina grained" and
"cohesive" soil encountere to help determine their plasticity characteristics, and
as an aid in classification of the soil. This test includes both a liquid Imit and a
plastic limit. The Plastic index, the difference between the liquid ancl plastic limits,
is then detemiined. The results of the liquid limit provide a measure of the tested
soils' shear strength and are analogous to the Direct Shear test. When coupled
with the plastic index, the results help to classify the in-placa soil on a basis of these
soil characteristics. The result of the test indicated the tested soil was "slightly
plastic," and is so reported at the appropriate depths on the boring log.
