(
Ltr. J.Heilman (B0305-009)
June 24, 2003
Page 2
Item i16 2 x 10 beam at living room appears to be overspanned.
See Page #8-We consulted with R P Meyers of the engineering department at Dunn
Lumber in Bellevue. He calculated that the 4 x 10 beam was not overspanned.
There are 2 2 x 10 beams tied together h: •= to make a 4 x 10 beam.
Item #7 (:eiling joists need to be continuous to exterior walls or connectors need to be designed
to resist loads from rcof. (Tension Loads)
See Page #8-We consulted with R P Meyers about this issue also. He told us that we
need to tie the 2 x 4 ceiling joists together with CS 16 straps. This will restore the
strength to the roof system. We will nail these straps to the underside of each 2 x 4
ceiling joist. The straps will run a minimum of 24" onto each 2 x 4 on both sides of
the 4 x 10 ceiling beam. The ceiling joists will be able to handle the tension loads from
the roof with this added strapping. Each slrap will be continuous and a minimum of
52" long.
Item #8 Electrical system should be tested by a licensed electrical contractor. Provide results
of testing to building department.
We will choose an electriciai M test the system after we can attach the wires to the
house.
Item #9 Provide support of ridge at front of house
See Page #5-Support will be added to the ridge at the front of the house.
Item #10 Show how ledger is attached to the existing house (at decks).
See Page #7-The 2 x 6 ledgers for the deck and the front porch are lag screwed to the
rim joist of the house. The lag screws are 5/8" x 5 1/2" each. They are staggered from
top to bottom and are spaced 16" apart.
Item #11 Provide minimum 36" landing not more than 8" below the finished floor at front door. If
4 or more risers, provide guardrail and handrail. Provide detail(s) on deck sections. 36"
guardrail required at decks 30" or more above finished graae. Guardrails shall have
ornamental pattem or intermediate rails such at a 4" space cannot pass through.
See Page #6 and #10-We will provide a landing of not less than 36" for the front door.
There will be a handrail added since there are five risers. It will be attached as shown in
the drawing. A guardrail will be added ta the deck as shown. The guardrail will have
intermediate rails at no more than 4" apart.
