'
GEOTEO{WGL ENGINEEPoNG STUOV E-12863
1 March 17,2007
In no case should the stripped or grubbed materials be used as structural fill or mixed with
material to be used as structural fill. The stripped materials may be "wasted" on site in non-
structural landscaping area, or they should be exported.
' Existing utility pipes to be abandoned should be plugged or removed so that they do not
provide a conduit for water and cause soil saturation and instability problems.
Following the stripping operation, the ground surfact: where structural fill, foundations, slabs,
or pavements are to be placed should be observed by a representative of ECI. Soil in loose
1 or soft areas, if recompacted and still yielding, shold be overexcavated and replaced with a
granular structural fill. The optional use of a geotextile fabric placed directly on the
overexcavated surFace may also help to bridge unstable areas. ECI can provide
Irecommendations for geotextiles, if necessary.
Temporary Excavations
IThe following information is provided solely as a service to our client. Under no
circumstances should this information be interpreted to mean tiat ECI is assuming
( responsibility for construction site safety or the contractor's activities; such responsibility is
1 not being implied and should not be inferred.
I In no case should excavation slopes be greater than the limits specified in local, state
(WISHA), and federal (OSHA) safety regulations. Based on the information obtained from our
subsurface exploration, the loose soils encountered within the top 10 feet of the borings
wouid be classified as Type C by WIS:iA/OSHA. Temporary cuts greater than 4 feet in height
in Type C soils should be sloped at an inclination of 1.5H:1V (Horizontal:Vertical). The
medium dense to very dense soils underlying soils would by classified as Type A by
( WISHA/OSHA. Temporary cuts greater than 4 feet in height in Type A soils should be sloped
at and inclination of 0.75H:1V. If seepage is encountered in the excavation, the soii type
should be considered Type C and cut accordingly.
, An ECI representative should observe temporary excavations to verify soil and groundwater
1 conditions and the soil type.
If slopes of the above inclinations or flatter cannot be constructed, temporary shoring may be
necessary. Shoring recommendations are provided in the "Shoring Recommendations"
 section below.
, Structural Fill
Structural fill is defined as compacted fill placed under buildings, roadways, floor slabs,
pavements, oiher load-bearing areas, or behind retaining walls. Structural fill should be
placed in horizontal lifts not exceeding 12 inches in loose thickness and compacted to a
minimum of 95 percent of its laboratory maximum dry density determined in accordance with
ASTM Test Designation D1557 (Modified Proctor). The fill materials should be placed at or
near their optimum moisture content,
EART}i CONSUUING IMCQRPORATED Paae 5
