Gcotechnical Engineering Evaluation
Fox Residence Underpinning and retaining Wall Design
Everett, Washington
SITE CONDITIONS
Surface Conditions
NGA File No.853512
August 3, 2012
Page 2
The property is an irregular -shaped parcel and is gently to moderately sloping down to the north and
northwest. The property is bounded to the west, south, and cast by residential properties, and to the north
by Mukiitco Boulevard. The residence is located within the southern portion of the property. A grass
lawn is located to the on the southern, eastern, and northern sides of the residence. The northern lawn
covers the length of the property to the property line. The area to the west of the residence is covered
with some lawn, but also a slope with exposed dirt. Past this area and continuing to -` c vest and
northwest, the property is covered with young to mature trees and underbrush, and a steep slope is located
to the west of the property. We did not observe surface water within the site during our site visit.
The property generally slopes moderately down to the north and northwest. Undocumented fill slopes
around the residence have inclinations of approximately 20 to 36 degrees (36 to 73 percent), but the areas
below the fill areas slope at approxin.ately 6 to 10 degrees 01 to 18 percent). Profiles of the site slopes
are shown on Cr ss Sections A A', B-B', and C-C', in Figures 3, 4, and 5, respectively.
Subsurface Conditions
Geology: The geologic units for this area are shown on the Distribution and Description of Geologic
Units in the Mukilteo Quadrangle Washington, by James P. Minard (USGS, 1982), The site is mapped
as Qtb (Transitional Beds). The Transitional Beds deposit is described as mostly thick beds of gray, clay,
silty and fine to very fine sand. Our explorations generally encountered fine to medium sand below the
fill generally consistent with .ne description of the Transitional Beds.
Explorations: The subsurface conditions within the site were explored on Friday, July 13, 2012 by
excavating three hand augers to depths ranging from 3.3 to 6.5 feet below the existing ground surface and
garage slab. The approximate locations of our explorations are shown on the Site Plan in Figure 2. A
geologist from NGA was present during the explorations, examined the soils and geologic conditions
encountered, obtained samples of the different soi! types, and maintained logs of the hand augers.
The soils were visually classified in general accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System,
presented in Figure 6. The logs of our hand augers are attached to thi: report and are presented as Figure
NELSON GEOTECHNICAL ASSOCIATES, INC.
