Surcharges due to sloping ground, adjacent footings, <br />vehicles, construction equipment, etc., must be added to these values. Loading dock <br />walls should be designed with a horizontal surcharge equivalent to 40 percent of the <br />dock vertical live loading. <br />The above equivalent (luid pressures assume that the backfill is compacted to 95 percent <br />of the modified Proctor maximum dry density (ASTM:D-1557). Additional compaction <br />near the wall will increase lateral earth pressure while a lesser degree of compaction <br />could permit post-construction settlements. Only light, hand-held vibratory equipment <br />should be used within 3 feet of the wall. <br />5.6 Drainage Considerations <br />Site grades should be set so that water does not collect adjacent to the buildings. The <br />ground should slope downward away from the structures so that runoff may be carried <br />to a suitable distant discharge. The base of all retaining walls, loading dock walis, and <br />locations where fioor level is at or below adjacent outside grade should be protected <br />from seepage or groundwater by a perforated pipe at the base elevation. The perforated <br />pipe should be totally surrounded by at least 6 inches of pea gravel. This foundation <br />drainage system should be allowed to discharge via tightline downslope by gravity to a <br />s:orm sewer or other suitable outfall. Roof and surface runoff should not discharge into <br />the perforated footing drain system. Instead, a separate tightiine drain system or spiash <br />blocks should be used. In other areas., where excavations are made, seepage zones <br />may develop from cut faces. Such localized seepage areas should be blanketed with <br />rock to control piping and erosion. <br />The contractor should be prepared to divert surface water runoff around exposed <br />ground surfaces. This should include diversion of water runoff from the adjacent <br />property west of the site, which presently drains onto the subject property. Additionaily, <br />if areas of spring activity are encountered during construction in excavations; cuiverts, <br />subdrains, or pump sump installation may be necessary to transport the water past the <br />area being developed. <br />
