Brion Michael Henault
2222 Lombard Ave
Everett, WA 98201
   0 T L, roil
[ki
p i -+ n n i n r Dew, January 26, 2005
Everett Planning Commission
Dept. of Planning & Community Development
City of Everett
2930 Wetmore Ave Suite 8A
Everett, WA 98201
Dear Commission Members,
As a resident of the Bayside neighborhood I am appalled at the proposal by Providenc,;
Medical Center to demolish a block of the Donovan District. One of the main reasons I
chose to buy a home in the North Everett core was its unique blend of architectural
character. Proceeding with the proposed scope of work will leave a blemish to all the
Northwest neighborhoods.
Having a background in Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning, I understand the
dynamics of land values and location. However, the decision to destroy a residential
block of historically significant homes and replace them with a commercial structure or
parking makes no sense to me.
Aesthetic concerns are not the only factors involved here. The added noise and traffic
both during and after construction will further impact the remaining Donovan District
residents as well as those of surrounding neighborhoods. Since my childhood, Everett has
sought to revitalize the downtown neighborhoods, improve density and commerce. The
function of the proposed satellite structure and parking would be better served being
located in the downtown Everett core rather than an existing residential neighborhood.
My interest in saving the Donovan District homes goes beyond my interest in historic
preservation and safety concerns. The builder of these homes, Edward Donovan was my
great grandfather. I remember as a child my grandmother driving me past these houses
and telling me about the man who built them and the people who lived there. The
Donovans were a pioneer family of the Riverside Neighborhood and my great
grandfather was a part of Everett's growth to what it is today.
Everett has the opportunity to show what a city of the new millennium can be. There are
many exciting projects slated for the near future. Progress however, does not necessarily
mean razing a vibrant neighborhood.
Thank you for yaur time and compassion,
Brion Henault
