January 28, 2005
Planning Commission
Department of Planning and Community Development
City of Everett
2930 Wetmore Ave Suite 8A
Everett, WA 98201
To Whom It May Concern:
I am the remaining property owner on the Rockefeller -Oakes block. I appreciate the
desire for a cancer center and additional patient parking. However, many things have
come into play as of late, that I feel more time is needed.
In the past, I understand, the Hospital has tried to negotiate for grounds now owned by
the College, to no avail. However, I read the front page of the Everett Herald, January 20
and it states County In Hunt For New College. The college in North Everett has been
hoping to expand into a four-year college. Possibly the reason for its reluctance to part
with its present property, should the four year college in North Snohomish County
become a reality, the Everett College property may become available to the Hospital, in
as much as it may abandon its plan for a four year college.
That medical care for cancer patients should at all times be available, is of course, a must.
But the present plan for 10 to 20 years shows very little faith in the present Cancer
Research. That cancer will be treated ten years from now as it is today is unreal. There
were also plans expressed for a cancer center to be built forty years from now. Forty
years from now? Cancer may not even exist forty years from now. To plan so far into the
future is ludicrous, where any disease is concerned.
There is also the problem of an aging hospital. To plan around Everett General in a
spreading plan that requires tearing down the old Colby Hospital, removing the Wetmore
parking lot, and removing the soil so as to bring it to ground level with the play field,
tearing down the parking garage and removal of the Donovan Allen homes East of the
Hospital grounds to build a parking lot, and later a Cancer center possibly. One that
science may have long surpassed. A center built 20 years ago, will in all probability be
obsolete, it will no longer serve the educated system. Surrounding an aging hospital with
new centers that do not relate to the old Hospital, could create morepproblems for the city
that we have today. And it may very well come. -
