Our conclusions were as follows: 1. The new foundations appear extremely shallow. All exterior foundations should be founded at least 18 inches below the final ground surface. 2. The soils encountered in the footing excavations consisted primarily of soft, saturated, sandy silt. A laxge diameter rod could be easily forced into tlie ground (by hand) to a depth of one to two feet. Footings placed on this soil will likely undergo sizeable settlements. 3. Unless sizeable footing settlements can be tolerated, the footings should be taken down to firm natural soil. This appears to be at a depth of about i�vo feet, although we cannot tell without excavating several pits in the foundation area. Another alternative would be to excavate down to firm bearing and refill part of the trench with compacted sand and gravel. However, the base of the footing should still be at least 18 inches below final grade.
