r+s ,
 I 'J
Botesch, Nash & Hall Architects, P.S.
September 22, 1992
Mr. Tim Tyler
Buildinp Department
City of Everett
3200 Cedar Street
Everett, WA 98201
Re: Providence Hospital
North Winp Expansio
Job No. 855
Dear Tim:
I am writinp to confirm the information reviewed in our meetinp of September 12, 1992, with Steve
Miller ar.d Chris Lark and our meetinp on September 17 with Steve Miller and Sam Preston.
The state of Washinpton's "state•wide amendments" to the 1991 edition of the Uniform Buildino
ode Sandards, effective July 1992, has two revisions that could assist Pravidence Hospital in
reducinp construction costs associated with the Notth Winp Expansion.
The tirst amendment is VJHC 51-20-0551, which revises the required separation in buildinps of
mixed occupancy. The result of this revision reduces the required occupancy separation between an
open parking garage (8-3) and a Hospital (1 from four (4) hours to three (3) hours as required by
Table No. 5-B.
The eecond amendment which wil benefit the Hospital is WAC 51-20-1011, which allows the use of
the Life Safety Codes' "Suite concept". This revision permits one-hour corridor construction to be
nonrated within the suite, providod that the eipht (8) listed conditions are addressed.
In the days followinp the first meetinp, our office applied the effect of the suite concept to the North
Winp project. We determined that, due to the mazimum of 10,000 square feet allowed ICondition
No. 11, we would revise the main floor emergency depattment into a suite while leavinp the corridor
construction of the first-floor surpery suite as submitted durinp the building permit review.
The suite concept reduces costs in the following three areas:
1. Deletion of the required fire wall above the ceilinA and below the slab of the floor above.
2. Deletion of inechanical fire dampers where they penetrete the previously required fire walls.
3. Deletion of door hardware and associated UL Ratinps for openings within the corridor walls.
This hardware includes door closers, mapnetic hold-opens, and smoke seals. In addition,
tempered safety glass can be substituted for wire glass in relite openings.
n reviewinp the contract locatiun of fire dampers to determine which could be deleted, we found
that application of th UBC Section 1706, Part (b!: Exception 3 and UBC Section 4306, Part (jl, Item
5, Exception can also allow the deletion of a number of fire dampers.
4206 Hoyt Avenue Everett, Washington 98203 • 206/259-0868 • 20E/774-3341 • FAX 206/252-4334
