 ! 1
Mr. Tim Tyler
Pape 2
September 22, 7992
Our second meeting on September 17, 1992, was scheduled to review the city of Everett's
interpretation of these UBC sections. The application of these sections produced the folfowinp
determfiation:
1. Fire dampers are not required in corridor separation walls if the steel duct has no openinps
into the corridor and is a minimum 26-paupe.
2. Fire dampers are required when passinp throuph occupancy separations includinp rooms
defined as a one-hour separation in Table 10-A.
3. Fire dampers are not required at the base of the two-hour-rated shafts if the shaft is of
noncombustible construction extendinp to the underside ot a three-hour-floor/ceilinp
separation and fire dampers are insialled when the duct dxits the two-hour shaft.
The attached copies of the architectural drawinp, Sheet A-16, and the mechanical drawinps, Sheets
M4.1, M4.2, and M4.3, have been revised to reflect the cumulative determinations from both
meetinps which could reduce construction costs.
Sheet A-16 has been provided to indicate, in color, the revised wall ratinps of the main floor
F.merpency Oepartment suite 19,34P square feetl.
As we diacussed, Rooms M023, M025, M052, and M056 are less than 100 aquare feet and do not
require a one•hour-occupancy separation as stated in Table 70-A of the UBC.
The first floor surpery department exceeds 10,000 square feet and cannot be considered a suite. We
have withdrawn our reGuest to consider a portion of this Qepartment a suite because isalatinp this
area with the required occupancy separation will nepate any potential coat savinps.
Sheet M4.1 has been provided to indicate the deletion of fire dampers at the base of the two-hour
shafts.
Sheets M4.2 and Md.3 have been provideJ to indicate the deletion of fire dampers resultinp from
acceptance of the suite cencept on the main ioor, as well as the corridor damper exception on the
main and first floors.
I am confident you will find all revisions noted in the attached drawinps consistent with our mutual
underatandinp at the two meetinps. I have provided two copies of each drawinp for your review.
Please return one approved copy to have available on site Aurinp inapection.
We appreciate your prompt attention in assistinp Providence Hospital ta reduce unnecessary
construction costs. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
80 SH & NALL ARCHITECTS, P.S.
oore, AIA
dmo
cc: Scott Bond, Providence Hospital
Jim Lorenzen, Providence Hospital

i.
i
i
