� SNOHOMISH HEALTH DISTRICT <br /> 3020 Rucker Avenue, Suite 102 pUBLIC HEALTH ADVISORY <br /> Everett, WA 98201-3971 UPDATE - SEPTEMBER 1995 <br /> 206 339-5250 <br /> EVERETT SMELTER SITE AND SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOOD <br /> GUIDELINES FOR REDUCING POTENTIAL EXPOSURE <br /> - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - <br /> While the Washington State Depa.rtment of Ecoiogy and ASARCC ;ncorporated continue to work <br /> toward a cieanup solution for the contaminated soils in the north Everett smelter area, the <br /> Snohomish Health District is reissuing a health advisory to all persons who might live or work <br /> in the area. Although it appears that there is no immediate danger to human health, people in the <br /> area should use the following precautionary health guidelines to reduce potential exposure: <br /> 1 . �hiidren ar� more likely than adults to be, ex�osed to ar�p�s� �ead and <br /> Eadmium in soils and dust Their ezpoc��re $hr�uld be �i�*+i� � as M �rh <br /> Dracttcal. �¢ <br /> • Childre� should not play in dirt. Play areas covered with grass, or some other material, <br /> will reduce a child's exposure. <br /> • Encourage your children to wash their hands and taces after piaying outdoors. <br /> • Damp mop and dust your house frequently to reduce your child's contact with dust. <br /> ' 2 . Avoid eatina veaetables grown in gardens located within the affected area. <br /> • Lead and cadmium are known to accumulate in leafy vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, <br /> and beet greens. <br /> • If vegetables are consumed trom local gardens, wash thoroughly before eating. <br /> 3 . �Jse caution while w rkfng in the soil. <br /> • Avoid all unnecessary exposure to soil or dust in the affected area. Moisten soil before <br /> moving iL <br /> ' • V✓hen disturbing the soil, wear clean, full body proteclive clothing (coveralls or long <br /> sleeve shi�i and pants), shoes, and gloves. For maximum ?rotec;ion wear a dust mask or <br /> other respiratory protection. Wash work clothes separate from other clothing. <br /> • Avoid eating, drinking, smoking, or chewing any material while in the work area. <br /> • Soil that is to be disturbed should be sprayed with water before and during the project to <br /> prevent the generation ot dust. <br />
