Wetland B is a Category II wetland according to Section 37.090 of the City of
Everett's Sensitive Areas Ordinance. Category II wetlands generally require a 75-
foot buffer.
Merril!and Rine Creek
Memll and Ring Creek flows northward from Merrill Creek Parkway and across the
eastern portion of the site. Vegetation along the stream channel is dominated by
salmonberry, stink cuRant and youth-on-age. The creek was turbid due to heavy
rains and no fish wrre observed in the stream. Immediately downstream from the
site, the creek falis off an approximately seven-foot waterFall and onto a shallow
bench. This watertall appears to be a fish barrier, preventing any fish from
accessing the site.
Merriil and Ring Creek would be rated as a Category II stream according to Chapter
37.130 of the City of Everett's Sensitive Areas Ordinance. Category II streams
generally require a 50-foot buffer.
Narbeck Creek
Narbeck Creek is not on the project site but flows near the southwestern and
northwestern corners of the site. Narbeck Creek is a small intermittent stream that is
dry throughout the summer with no known fish use. No wetlands ware found in
association with the Narbeck Creek near the southwest comer. Wetland A was
y found on steep slopes over Narbeck Creek rear the northwest corner of the site.
!-t Narbeck Creek would be rated as a Category III stream according to Chapter 37.130
k' of the City of Everett's Sensitive Areas Ordinance. Category II streams generally
require a 25-foot buffer.
t.i
Ail of the uplands on the site except the filled and graded area in the southeastem
portion of the site consist of mixed coniferous/deciduaus forest. Dominant conifers
include Douglas fir(Pseudotsuga menziesii), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophyfla)
and western red cedar. Daminant deciduous trees include red alder and bigleaf
mapte (Acer macrophyllum). The understory is dominated by shrubs including
salmonberry, Indian plum (Oem/eria cerasiformis), red huckleberry (Vaccinium
parvillorum), dull Oregon grape (Berberis nervosa), and salal (Gaulfheria shallon).
Sword fern (Polystichum munitum) is the only prominent herbaceous species.
Uplands disturbed by past filling and grading activities near Merrill and Ring Creek
Parkway are dominated by dense stands of red alder saplings and red fescue
(Festuca rubra).
5.0 WETLAND FUNCTIONS AND VALUES
Wetiands, in general, provide many valuable ecological and social functions,
including stormwater storage, water quality protection, groundwater recharge and
discharge and wildlife hauitat. Of the on-site wetlands, Wetland A has low to
moderate value for many of these functions due to its small size. Wetland B
generally has moderate functional value due to its larger size and the presence of a
perennial stream within the wetland.
Wetlandnd Strcam Study Report TdaseConsuttanb
Mertill Creak Aportments 4 •R
February20, 1998
