Churchill,
InU•oduction
l-101
April 10, 3003
In accordancc vith your rcquest and autlorization, Zipper Zcman Associates, Inc. (ZZA)
has completed a geotechnical evaluation of the timber pile retaining wall replacement plan
prepared by Chopelas & Associates, Inc. The replacement ptan was provided via fax and
indicated the removal of the existing timber wall and backfill nd the construction of a nev
concrete retaining wall founded below the colluvium which vill support a concrete sudaced
cantilever deck with counter balances. The purpose of our evaluation was ro review the proposed
plan relative to surface and subsurface condi:ions at thc site from which conclusions reeardie
the geotechnical feasibility of the plan and geotechnical uesien values for the proposed retaining
vall (as requested by Chopelas Sc Associates, Inc) could be formulated.
Conclusions and Recommendations
General
The subsurtace conditions in dte vicinity of de existing timber pile vall have been
evaluated on the basis of the proposed retaining wall replacement plan prepazed by Chopelas &
rlssociates, Inc., the engineering characteristics of the subsurface materials encountered at the
site, and the anticipated soil behavior bodi during and after construction. Based on the
informatio obtaied from our exploration program, the project apoears geotechnically feasible
with respect to soil and roundwater conditions encountered at the site.
However, it must be noted that the depth of the existing home and hot tub patio
foundations and the nature of the soils supporting these foundations is currentty unknown. The
anticipated cut depths to construct the proposed concrete wall coupled ith the proximity of the
existing home and patio could have an advers affect on the exisang structures as a result of
constructing temporary slope cuts and may require mitiacive measures such as underpinning. It
may also be difficult to construct legal cut slope inclinations iven the site coustrainu and soil
I H905 —73rd Avcnue W, Suite I 17 Lynnwaod.
