Thelma Kelly April 7, 1982 Page 2
1. The upper soil unit consists of a loose brown slightly
silty gravelly sand, identified as fill; it extends to a
depth of 4 ft or more.
2. The lowermost unit encountered is a dense tan medium
sand. This was found to the maximum explored depth of 7
ft.
Groundwater was not encountered.
, Proposed Construction We understand that a two story, wood-
frame single-family structure will be built on the site. Cuts
of up to 17 feet in height are anticipated.
Conclusions and Recommendations On t:te basis of our investi-
gations at the site, we draw the following principal conclu-
sio,is:
1. Soils below depths of about 4 ft are moderately dense
granular and for all practical purposes, incompressible.
2. We anticipate that excavation for the structure will
expose the bearing horizon throughout most of the building
areas, although it is possible that in some areas some fill
may remain. All foundation elements should be extended to
the uppermost native sand unit which underlies the fill.
Access to the bearing horizon can be achieved by piers cast
in open excavation or by removal and recompaction of the
fill.
3. Spread footings mav be used on well-prepared undis-
turbed surfaces of the native sand or on compacted fill;
these may be designed for bearing pressures of 2000 psf.
4. The fill unit may be used (in its present state) for
support of grade slab flaors, given favorable weather and
construction precautions to protect the pr.epared subgrade.
5. Excavation slopes will be cut primarily in the fill
material and the dense native sand which underlies it.
Temporary slopes in the fill material may be cut 7 vertical
to 1 horizontal. In the native sand they may be cut 3 ver-
tical to 2 horizontal. Because of the proximity of the
project to the existing Walls at the east property line,
it may prove desirable to remove at least a portion of the
upper retaining wall (which appears to retain fill, and
which is in an advanced state of outward movement). We
note that the excavation will approach to within 9 ft of
the existing outdoor fireplace (which belongs to the uphill
